I am left to wonder to what degree there may be transposition or chemical changes within the body to produce elements other than one has eaten. Hi Taffy, While some elements are, as you suggest, made by the body, one thing is certain; and that is that our bodies cannot manufacture a number of key nutrients that are crucial to our health. For instance minerals, which are used to form teeth and bones help with buffering acids and are critical to many other essential bodily functions, can never be made by the body out of any other substances and must instead be ingested. And the minerals we consume must be in a form that is readily assimilable in order for our bodies to be able to properly utilize them. There are also 8 essential amino acids that cannot be synthesized by the human body and must be consumed in the form of food. The same is true for essential fatty acids, which cannot be made by our bodies and must come from the foods we eat. Here's Wikipedia's definition of a vitamin: A vitamin is an organic compound required as a nutrient in tiny amounts by an organism.[1] A compound is called a vitamin when it cannot be synthesized in sufficient quantities by an organism, and must be obtained from the diet. While vitamin D can be manufactured by our bodies when we are exposed to sunlight, (which is why it's actually considered by some to be more accurately described as a hormone than a vitamin) I think this is a rare exception to the rule. We most definitely cannot make vitamin C, which is why sailors who were out to sea for long periods of time and ran out of fresh produce would often die of scurvy. The point is that our urine can't very well contain all the vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients we need for good health if these things are missing from our diets to begin with.
